In 2015/16, Argus launched a pilot to deepen our diversion practices. Over an 11 month period, 41 youth were prevented from becoming homeless or diverted from emergency shelter to safe accommodation. Youth were provided with support and given the tools they needed to find or maintain housing. This pilot conservatively saved the system an estimated $94,290.00 while improving shelter capacity. It did not require additional resources to implement. It was facilitated by one staff member at one location.
Summer 2016, Argus develops a Youth Homelessness Prevention and Diversion Tool: A Housing First & Strength-Based Approach to Preventing Youth Homelessness in Waterloo Region.
Currently, Argus is averaging 17 homelessness preventions or diversions per month.
