At Argus, we offer 24/7 homelesness prevention and shelter diversion services to youth in crisis anywhere within the Waterloo Region. In addition to our food, shelter and constant staff support, we also offer a voluntary life-skills acquisition program whose main goal is to mobilize young people experiencing homelessness towards a healthy and viable re-integration into their community.

Creating Youth Employment

Our Social Enterprise, Uptown Thrift, Exists to Create Low-Barrier, Inclusive Employment for Youth so They can Develop Skills, Lead and THRIVE

Located at 742 King Street East, Cambridge, in the heart of Uptown Preston, Uptown Thrift is a job creation social enterprise which focuses on the sale of good quality, reusable items. 100% of store proceeds are used to create youth employment.

You can help by donating good quality, gently-used clothing, household and décor items, furniture, kitchenware, and more. Drop them off during our regular store hours, and we will revitalize them for resale at Uptown Thrift.

Available Positions for Youth

In collaboration with the Government of Canada, Argus offers paid job skills training to youth, between the ages of 15-30.

Argus provides 30 hours of paid employment training, over 10 weeks. For 22 hours of the week, participants are provided with hands on experience at our store, Uptown Thrift. For 8 hours of the week, participants are enrolled in professional development workshops. If you are interested, please call 226-338-9966 for an interview! We recruit up to five times per year.

Are you a recent graduate and looking to improve job skills to get into the job market?

Have you had barriers to employment where you can get help in a supportive environment to overcome those barriers and get on track to employment? Have you been out of work and are looking to get back into a job that compliments your creative abilities? Please see below!

As a participant, you will learn important skills to help you succeed in today’s job market – all while earning a wage. Eligible candidates will receive 30 hours of comprehensive employment training per week, compensated at $17.20 per hour, over 10 weeks starting November 11, 2024, developing skills such as, Goal Setting, Developing a Dynamic Resume, Communication, Problem Solving, Decision Making and Self Awareness, Social Media Marketing, Ad campaigns all while being paid for your time. You will then have an opportunity to test these skills in an Eco-friendly retail store where you will learn marketing, merchandising, customer service , branding and more! It’s a great opportunity! Eligible candidates will also earn a $150 completion bonus!

Argus is offering a job training program, which helps overcome barriers to employment and develop a broad range of skills and knowledge in order to participate in the current and future labour market.
